Project Iris Athletics is a community service project that raises money/receives donations for athletic equipment, primarily track and field and training equipment, for Team Aithon. Project Iris Athletics was started by me, Stephanie Claeys, in the spring of 2013.
I started toying with the idea of a community service project after visiting the Davidson Institute for Young Scholars’ 2012 summit and learning about the Young Ambassadors program. The Davidson Institute for Young Scholars is a non-profit organization for the benefit of highly capable students. The Institute constantly stresses the importance of leadership and community service. One of the programs they offer to enhance these skills is the Young Ambassadors program which selects a few students with achievable community service projects and mentors the students to make the projects a success. I collaborated with my teacher, Mr. Gonzales, who was a Peace Corps volunteer in Dominica and found out about team Aithon. I love sports, so when a chance came to help other people express their love for it as well, I just couldn’t pass it up.
Since the spring of 2013 I with the help of others, have been fundraising, and collecting donations to send down to Dominica. So far I have sent down two packages both containing a variety of equipment and I hope to send down more soon.
